Research on the Topic of Hierarchical Network Maps

Description

Network communication has become indispensable in business, education, and government. Along with the pervasive use of the Internet, the issues of information overload as well as large-scale misuse of the efficient communication network infrastructure arose. To tackle the information overload problem in the context of network security, novel visual approaches are presented to interact with large amounts of IP-related security alerts.

Due to the open communication infrastructure, misuse (i.e., through viruses, root kits, etc.) has become a major concern in the last few years. We try to complement automatic intrusion detection mechanisms from network security through visual analysis methods as novel attacks are hard to identify with automatic methods on the one hand and as pure statistics about the number of alerts rarely lead to the indispensable insight on the other hand. To gain deeper insight into the distribution of diverse traffic loads and large quantities of security alerts over the Internet, we introduced the Hierarchical Network Map, which is designed as a spatial, hierarchical, and space-filling visualization technique of the IPv4 address space.
