Martina Kanning

Prof. Dr. Martina Kanning, born 1976, acquired her diploma in Sport Science in 1999 at the University of Bielefeld. After her degree, a two year employment at a physiotherapy facility followed. At this stage Martina Kanning was responsible for the conceptual structure and the management of the medical training for therapeutic purposes. In 2001, Martina Kanning started to work at the department for Sport and Health Science at the University of Stuttgart. This occupation ended in 2015. In 2006, she received her PhD in Stuttgart. Her PhD thesis dealt with the changes in motivational behaviour of coronary artery patients. During her time as a postdoc, Martina Kanning analysed the affective reactions, caused by physical activity. The studies were based on a social-ecological approach. On the one hand they were focussed on the regulative effect of everyday life physical activity on well-being in older adults and on the other hand, the studies examined the relation between personal and environmental factors and their effects on physical activity. In 2014 Martina Kanning habilitated in this topic.

Since October 2015, Martina Kanning has been employed at the University of Konstanz. First, as a deputized professor and since August 2016 as a professor for Sport Science.

From 2007 to 2011, Martina Kanning was a member of the Mentoring Programme for the specific promotion of highly qualified up-and-coming scientists. In 2011 she was awarded a scholarship for her habilitation from of the Brigitte- Schlieben Lange Programme of the Ministry of Science, Research and Arts Baden-Württemberg. Martina Kanning has been teaching socio-scientific issues in the field of Sport Science and she has been lecturing methods of social and behavioural sciences for more than 10 years now.

My research follows the empirical-analytical science approach. With a social-ecological perspective, I investigate the association between physical activity and subjective well-being in everyday life and analyse to what extent this association is affected by situational factors like the build or social environment or psychosocial constructs. Furthermore, I am interested in conditions that facilitate or hinder physical activity and assess impacts of physical activity on mental health. In addition, I develop evidence- and theory-based interventions to promote an active lifestyle. One issue of this research focus is to reduce the gap between research scientist and practitioners.
