Social pretend play is an activity through which children acquire and train social and social-cognitive skills. The study first aims to investigate whether play tutoring effectively promotes children’s level of social pretend play (proximal intervention effect), their social-cognitive skills, social skills, and peer relations (distal intervention effects). We will also investigate which play tutoring behaviors most strongly stimulate children’s social-cognitive and interactive facets of pretend play during the intervention sessions. Second, we will investigate potential mediating paths.

We will conduct a controlled intervention study involving 32 educational playgroups (about 250 children between 3 and 4 years). 16 playgroups will be randomly assigned to the intervention groups. In the intervention group, a trained study collaborator will facilitate children’s social pretend play through play tutoring in six sessions over six consecutive weeks. The study includes pre-test measures, post-test measures (three months after pretest) and a follow-up (six months after pretest). Children will be observed to assess their level of social pretend play, standardized tests will be used to assess their social-cognitive skills (Theory of Mind and emotion understanding). Parents and playgroup educators will complete measures on children’s social skills and peer relations quality. The intervention sessions will be videotaped to analyze the impact of actual play tutoring behavior on children’s social pretend play activities.
