(2001): Visual information retrieval for the WWW Usability evaluation and interface design : proceedings of HCI International 2001, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, 2001. 2001, pp. 1150-1154
In this paper we present the conception and the evaluation of a visual information retrieval system for the Web. Our work has been motivated by the lack of good user interfaces assisting the user in searching the Web. The selected visualisations and the reasons why they have been chosen are explained in detail. An evaluation of these visualisations as an add-on to the traditional result list is presented.

This paper presents a visual information seeking system for the WWW called INSYDER. The aim of INSYDER is to find business information from the WWW. Information seeking - especially on the Web - is an imprecise process. Information seekers often have only a fuzzy understanding of how they can get and information they want. This paper focuses on the use of information retrieval and visualisation techniques of the INSYDER system to support the user in extracting information from the WWW, namely in formulating queries, refining and reviewing results.

This paper discusses the evaluation of a visual information seeking system for the Web called INSYDER. The aim of INSYDER is to find business information on the Web. The evaluation compares different visualizations including HTML-List, ResultTable, ScatterPlot, BarGraph and SegmentViews. These visualizations support the interpretation of the search result phase of the information seeking process. First results of the evaluation with forty users are presented and an outlook on future work is given.

This paper presents a tool called INSYDER, an information assistant for finding and analysing business information from the WWW. INSYDER is a system using different agents for crawling the Web, evaluating and visualisation, and a first summary of user tests held in Great Britain, France and Italy are presented.

Dieser Beitrag behandelt die Präsentation und Diskussion unterschiedlicher Strategien zur Visualisierung entscheidungsrelevanter Daten, wie man sie heute typischerweise in entscheidungsunterstützenden Informationssystemen (Management Support Systems) findet. Die zunehmende Bedeutung derartiger Systeme in der betrieblichen Praxis hat dazu geführt, dass Fragestellungen hinsichtlich adäquater Formen der computerbasierten Visualisierung von entscheidungsrelevanten Daten für das Management immer mehr an praktischer Bedeutung gewinnen. Der Beitrag greift diese Fragestellungen auf und stellt drei ausgewählte Teilgebiete im Zusammenhang mit der Visualisierung entscheidungsrelevanter Daten näher vor: die Visualisierung von Unternehmenskennzahlen, von raumbezogenen und von unternehmensexternen Daten. Im abschließenden Ausblick wird auf Veränderungen im Bereich der Visualisierung entscheidungsrelevanter Daten unter dem Einfluss neuer technischer Entwicklungen eingegangen.

The idea of Information Visualization is to get insights into great amounts of abstract data. Especially document sets found by searching the World Wide Web are a special challenge. The paper gives a short overview on the variety of possible visualizations for this application area. Crucial factors for the success of visualizations are discussed. A combined approach is presented to use alternative simple visualizations, grouped around the traditional result-list, for usage with a local meta web search engine.

Nach einem funktionalen Überblick über das Gesamtsystem wird auf die Konzeption eingegangen. Aufbauend auf dem Rahmenkonzept von Shneiderman wird ein Multiagentensystem vorgeschlagen, das den Benutzer bei der Informationssuche unterstützen soll. Da der erfolgreiche Einsatz eines Business Intelligence Systems ganz wesentlich von der Art der Informationspräsentation bestimmt wird, beschäftigt sich ein wesentlicher Teil dieses Beitrags mit ausgewählten Ansätzen zur Visualisierung von Suchergebnissen, die innerhalb des Projektes verfolgt werden.

There is an increasing need for practical and comprehensive evaluation methods and tools for conformance testing with ISO standards. In this study, we focus on ISO 9241 which is an important ergonomic standard. A brief description shows its content and structure. Practical evaluations include the amount of time and resources which must be managed in software projects, while comprehensive evaluations require that the context of use be considered during the evaluation of user interfaces. In order to complete a comprehensive evaluation of usability, it is necessary to use more than one evaluation method. Therefore, an overview of different evaluation approaches is given, describing their advantages and disadvantages. Finally, the ISO 9241 Evaluator is presented in detail as an example of a practical expert-based evaluation method for conformance testing with the ISO 9241 standard, that can be integrated in a comprehensive evaluation approach.

There is an increasing need for practical and comprehensive evaluation methods and tools for conformance testing with standards. Practical means that the amount of time and resources must be manageable in software projects. Comprehensive means that the context of use has to be considered during the evaluation of user interfaces. The evaluation approach EVADIS III is such a practical and comprehensive one. In particular, it takes the context of use into consideration and provides computer support for the use of the evaluation procedure. It supports the evaluator during the evaluation process with detailed instructions. The first version of EVADIS III should be available at the end of 1995.

Surveys have shown that user interface development tools with domain competence based on human factors knowledge (e.g. guidelines, style guides, standards) are needed. This knowledge should be encountered, learned, practised, and expanded during ongoing use so that designers can learn and use it on demand. This paper addresses an important research approach of user interface development tools, namely to discover helpful, unobtrusive, structured, and organised ways to integrate the use of human factors knowledge into development tools. The aim is to support designers during the design process with powerful design aid tools leading to high ergonomic quality user interfaces.
